Youth submit proposals to Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee

On the 2nd , June, The inter party youth platform, IYOP presented Constitutional Amendment proposals to the committee of legal and Parliamentary affairs committee. The proposals included;

Amendment of Article 183 and subsequent amendments of the local government act to reduce the age for which one qualifies for local government positions to 18 years from 30years just like the case with Members of Parliament. Arguing that youth miss out on about 2918 leadership positions.

The youth also demanded the amendment of Article 78 (1)b to provide for a two term limit for the District female representatives to allow for increased opportunities to the young women to take up positions and achieve the purpose of affirmative action.

There were other proposals like the extension f the term of office of National Youth council to five years and the scrapping of the Ministry proposal of 1000 signatures for one contesting as an independent defining it as un achievable given that some interest groups like workers, youth among others have less than one thousand voters. Some of the issues were not constitutional but rather part of the acts and the committee advised youth to prepare to present these issues with particular interest on the electoral reforms under ;

  • Electoral commissions act
  • The National youth Council Act
  • The presidential elections Act
  • The Parliamentary Elections act
  • The Local governments Act
