The Attorney General has appealed against a Constitutional Court ruling which grants an injunction into the election of special interest groups including Youth MPs, Army representatives and Workers’ Representatives.

Recently, the Constitutional Court made the ruling challenging the process under which the above special interest groups are elected into Parliament following a petition filed by Kasozi Robinson, Moses Mauku and Catherine Aneno in 2010.

“In reference to the Youth MPs, the ruling challenges the fact that youth MPs are elected under the National Youth Council Act and yet these elections should be held under the Parliamentary Act.”

Now the Attorney General has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional court ruling.

In the meantime, Government is working on the amendments which will be taken to cabinet before they are tabled in Parliament to be debated. The State Minister for Youth Affairs, Hon. Evelyn Anite told UPFYA that she is optimistic that these amendments will be tabled in Parliament before the elections.

It is against this background that the youth movement under the leadership of the UPFYA has developed an online petition calling on the concerned parties to expedite the process of ensuring that the statute is tabled before Parliament for amendments.

Youth representation in Parliament is still as important as the youth issues in this country. The Youth MPs have appealed to the young people to stay calm as this process will be regularized. They further urge those vying for various positions to continue with primaries ahead of the upcoming elections.
